From that day, Corinne started to listen more. Of course, sometimes she was still impetuous. And sometimes the actors sputtered in response. But a new feeling had entered our rehearsals.

We were now at the end of the third week, exactly halfway to our first performance. Finally, everyone was feeling comfortable with the script. Half of the actors had memorised most of their lines. They were making some mistakes, though, and mispronunciations. Sometimes they added their own words to the text, which changed the meanings of whole monologues.

Since Corinne did not speak Dari, she was unaware of this. She was happy just to hear words coming from their mouths. I kept a script in my hand, and helped them to use the right words.

Every day we were getting better, better than the day before. Slowly, we were making Shakespeare’s story our own story.
